Hello, all! (I hope I'm allowed to do this)

I've just finished Fahrenheit 451, and would like to discuss the book with others who've finished, but anyone's welcome to comment regardless of whether they've completed the book or not. :)

My thoughts (minor spoiler)Collapse )

So what do you guys think?

Sorry that I won't be able to really participate in this discussion--I'm not on the home computer at the moment. But feel free to talk about first impressions of the writing, the characters, the initial introduction to the storyline, etc.

I'll try to come in later and reply to people! :(

Hello everyone! Sorry I'm so behind on, like, EVERYTHING and didn't comment on your introductions and just blah.

Anyway, this is just a reminder that the FIRST discussion post for Fahrenheit 451 is on Sunday, November 2! I'd recommend reading to the break on page 48 (or wherever it is on in the edition you've acquired--the sentence "he did not open the window"), since there isn't another break for a WHILE (about 15 pages later--again, in my edition). Unless you guys are game reading that far. Then I'd be fine with it.

Hey everyone! How're you doing? I haven't forgotten about you!

I was thinking I should probably set the deadline for when everyone should have the book. I kind of want to start reading by next SUNDAY, and have the first 50 pages read by November 2nd. What that be okay? I just really need to make sure, because now is a critical time for the elections so I know there will also be people out canvasing and doing other volunteer work. SO. If this is a bad time, say so in the comments and we'll have to work something else out.

Also, so this post isn't 100% boring as hell, feel free to introduce yourself in the comments. :D/ Write a little blurb about yourself--where you live, your interests, favorite books, hobbies, background, etc. etc.

Luv ya!

ETA: oops I guess I should introduce myself, too.Collapse )

1. Every book has to be a new comment! If you want to recommend five books, each one has to be its own seperate comment!
2. When rec'ing, post a summary of the book, and maybe its cover if you're super tech savy.
3. Don't bash anyone else's book recommendations! Everyone has different tastes and ideas. If you really, really would not be willing to read a certain book and want it known before there's a chance the book may be picked (like, if everyone EXCEPT you votes to read it), comment merely with the word "abstain." It's just that simple.

All kinds of books are welcome. Even if you want to recommend, like, a TEXT BOOK I really don't care. I don't want this to be a boring-ass club where we only read classics or some specific genre.

Hello again, everyone! Hope you're all having a fine week. :D/

Anyway, in this post there will be polls and my own thoughts that I hope will spark some discussion. Make sure to keep coming back to these posts to see what people after you have to say! Not that this is a huge book club or anything, haha. But a discussion can't thrive if no one talks to anyone else.

First off, I was thinking we could start the first week by reading 50 pages. At first I was thinking 100 pages, but that's because I have the personal freedom and a lacking schedule, both of which allow me to read 100 pages a DAY if I so please. But I recognize that most of you also have busy social schedules, work schedules, and school schedules, and the last thing I want is for this book club to feel like homework and something that's getting in the way of living your life.

Is starting off with 50 pages okay with you?

No, I'd rather read less!
No, I'd rather read more!
We'll just see after the first week.
I'd rather go by chapters instead of pages.

For chapters, we'd have to go on a book-by-book basis as some books have looooooooong chapters, and some (like the one I'm reading at the moment) can have as few as three pages in one chapter. However, I want to finish books in a semi-timely manner, and 50 pages a week seems almost too short for most books (it would take over a month for most novels). Opinions?

Now, the discussion of CONTENT. In the last post, rimn stated that she is uncomfortable about the idea of explicit sexual content for this book club. Now, I personally wouldn't mind reading a book that's 100% smut as long as it's good (an oxymoron?), but that brings up the argument of whether we should pick books that work for everyone, or if sometimes we're going to pick books that maybe some people would want to opt out of. (i.e. If someone were to rec this book I might back out of the discussion for that month, etc.)

I also wanted to put it out there real quick that you can post to this community whenever you want if you have something you want to discuss from a book we're reading. To be honest, I wouldn't mind if you posted here about anything and everything book related. But make sure to put it behind a cut in case you're reading faster than others. ALSO, during discussions, if you read ahead PLEASE only stick to discussing the things that were in the assigned pages. Don't show off you read more than everyone else unless it's stated beforehand that everyone read that far. You don't want to spoil a book for someone and make them want to stop reading it. (Any complaints or recommendations on about this community or the club itself should be taken to me or Riggy!)

And I'll be making a book recommendation post later tonight or sometime tomorrow! So please feel free to make a list or go look through Amazon right this second for books you'd love to read in this club.

Anyway, please also post a reply here stating that you've gotten the book. I have it, and I believe Riggy does too? Everyone knows what book we're starting with, right?

It's nice to meet you all! Have a great day.

This is the first post, and also the post for discussion about how the book club itself is going to be run!

Discussion on the following topics (or whatever comes to mind) would be totally cool:
- How many pages you want to read per week
- How discussions will follow
- Who will be the "discussion starter" (or person to post the discussion post) each week and how that will work in general
- How we're going to pick books
- What types of books we should read and what ones (if any) we should avoid
- Favorite books?

Really, anything is great as long as it gets a conversation going! All opinions are welcome!
